Dashcam footage captured the horrifying moment a 2-year-old, wearing only a diaper, wandered into the middle of a busy intersection in Arizona, before a good Samaritan rescued the toddler. I rushed to save him.
The video, taken Friday night in Mesa, shows a young boy running out into the road as a mother in a car screams, honks her horn and a driver quickly approaches. Some drivers were running just inches away from the toddler.
“When I watch the video, I feel hopeless and completely hysterical,” said the mother, who captured the terrifying incident on dashcam footage. Arizona Family News. “I felt like I was mentally preparing myself to see my child devastated.”
The mother said her 7-year-old son was in the back seat of the car and she could not risk using the car to block the toddler's passage.
Fortunately, she didn't have to feel despair for long. The same footage shows heroic bystanders chasing the boy and quickly transporting her to safety as she screamed.
“We were overwhelmed, but we were so happy that a kind woman sacrificed her life to get out on the road and catch him,” his mother added.
Alex Shavel, the Wandering Boy's father told Fox 10 Phoenix. He was not home when the children went out, but received an alert from his doorbell camera when a stranger brought his other son, who is 9 months old, into the house.
“I saw the door wide open and a woman with a child in her arms. She said the children were running in the middle of the road,” he said.
The children's mother, who is suffering from postpartum depression, went outside for a moment and forgot to lock the door, their father told Arizona Family News.
Mr Shavel expressed shame over the situation, but his mother, who filmed the incident, said people should not be so quick to judge.
“While we do not understand the full extent of her suffering, we as a community should extend grace, address her situation with compassion, and still hold her fully accountable,” she said. said.
The boy's father said the Department of Children's Services allowed his wife to stay with the children.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is also investigating and may face charges of endangering Shavel's wife.
