John Thune elected to succeed Mitch McConnell as Senate GOP leader

The Republican Senate conference on Wednesday selected Sen. John Thune of South Dakota to replace retiring Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Thune, who was running against Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, won 29 of the 53 Republican senatorial votes in the second round of secret ballot voting. did.

In the lead-up to the election, Scott was the most publicly supported candidate.

In the past 24 hours, Scott has secured three last-minute endorsements from Republican Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee) and Scott Lee (Utah). Ta. Scott was joined by Sen.
