Assassins, spies and a superpower on the rise: the rift between Canada and India – podcast | India

On June 18 last year, Hardeep Singh Nijjar spent a day at his local gurudwara, or Sikh temple. Mr. Nijjar, a plumbing contractor in Surrey, Canada, was well known in the area. But that night, as he was walking to his pickup truck, he was shot and killed by a masked man.

His death sparked an unusual conflict between India and Canada. Nijjar is from India, and the Indian government said he was a terrorist and was involved in the bombing that killed six people. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were credible suspicions that could link the Indian state to the killing, and Canadian police have since responded to the investigation into murders, targeted assassinations, extortion, intimidation and coercion, primarily against members of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Indian diplomats were accused of involvement. Sikh community in Canada.
