Thirty years after Susan Smith, the mother of a South Carolina murderer, went to prison for the drownings of her two infant sons, she was free for the first time Wednesday morning. He will appear on a prison courtroom broadcast for his parole hearing.
“I think the jury intended for her to serve a life sentence,” Tommy Pope, the prosecutor who handed down the conviction in Smith's case, told FOX News Digital. “They wanted her to spend her life repenting for what she had done to Michael and Alex and to herself. And she spent her time focusing on things like having sex with security guards.”
Pope, along with the former director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections and one of Smith's former girlfriends, spoke on Fox Nation's latest feature on the case and Smith's time in prison. “Susan Smith, Killer Mom: 30 Years Later”

Father of recently murdered sons and ex-husband told Fox Carolina He said, “I wish you all the same.'' [his] I'm afraid she won't come out. ”
“She always wanted to be in the spotlight in some way… She always wanted attention, she always tried to manipulate people. And I don't think she's ever going to change.” Smith told the outlet, adding that he still misses his two sons. “I should have stopped.”
David Smith and Tommy Pope are both scheduled to appear at a parole hearing Wednesday.
“There's a better chance that the South Carolina Legislature will be hit by a meteor tonight than Susan Smith will be paroled tomorrow,” says a representative for the victim of another infamous South Carolina murder, Alex Murdaugh. Eric Brand, a lawyer representing the public, told Fox News. Tuesday is digital.
“She never showed any real remorse for murdering her children.”

Bland said Susan Smith contacted her ex-husband at some point in recent months to talk to other family members about whether they would oppose parole, and asked if they planned to object as well.
“He was furious, saying, 'Are you sane?'” Bland added, adding that she may have been eligible for parole until she contacted her ex-husband. “She's paranoid… It's his children, and he lost them. So the wounds are still as raw as the first day they were murdered.”
Bland believes David Smith will oppose his ex-wife's parole when he appears at his ex-wife's hearing on Wednesday.
“He's going to testify about how his life has changed because of this,” Brand said. “He's never recovered…It's on his mind every minute of every day.”

Smith was unable to find any character witnesses to testify on her behalf. The NY Post reported.
“Under normal circumstances…30 years have passed…and in many cases the victim's family themselves… sOh, “Look, has she served enough?” Ms. Brand said, “We're a very Christian state, so people believe in forgiveness. No one I've talked to…she “Not a single person felt sorry for him,” he said.

October 25, 1994
Susan Smith strapped her sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander Smith, into the back seat of her car and drove them down a ramp into John D. Long Lake in Union, South Carolina. Ta.
Smith, then 22, said it took six minutes for the car to fill with water, drowning her sons and watching as the car sank to the bottom of the lake.
She ran to a home near John D. Long Lake and falsely told the homeowners that a “black man” had stolen her car, which contained her two sons. The homeowners called 911.

October 26th – November 1994 February
The young faces of Michael and Alexander Smith made national headlines for nine days as authorities searched for the man Susan claimed had kidnapped the boys. Susan and David Smith appealed on national television for the return of their children.
The Pope followed the news developments at the time and received updates on the incident from SLED.
“This whole story seemed so improbable,” Pope said on the Fox Nation special, “I've never heard of car robbers taking children in the wild. ” he said.
November 3, 1994
After failing a polygraph test, Susan Smith recanted her lie about the kidnapping and confessed to killing her two sons. She was charged with two counts of murder.

July 17, 1995
Susan Smith's trial began less than a year after she drowned her sons. Prosecutors argued that her motive for killing the boys was because the man she was dating at the time didn't want children, but Smith's defense argued that she was suicidal and initially wanted to have a son. He said he intended to commit suicide by drowning with the others.
“I was extremely distraught. I didn't want to be alive anymore! I felt like things couldn't get any worse,” Smith said in a confessional letter obtained by Fox News Digital. I'm writing. “I felt I could no longer be a good mother, but I didn't want my children to grow up without a mother. I knew I had to take my own life to protect us all from grief and harm. I felt it.”

“I really wanted to end my life and I was going to get in my car and go down the ramp to the water and I got halfway and then I stopped. I went again and I stopped… I took my kids. Smith has faced 10 disciplinary charges, including sexual activity with a prison guard and drug use.
August 26, 2024 and October 3, 2024
Smith was charged on Aug. 26 with communicating with victims and witnesses after speaking with a documentary filmmaker, and was sentenced on Oct. 3. According to South Carolina Department of Corrections policy, inmates are not allowed telephone calls or face-to-face interviews, but they are allowed to write letters. Smith lost his phone, tablet and dining privileges for 90 days.

On November 4th, Susan Smith became eligible for parole after spending 30 years in prison.

Smith is scheduled to appear on the prison's court feed during his first parole hearing on Nov. 20.
The parole board is not expected to announce its decision at Wednesday's hearing. The Board will instead announce its decision via an announcement on its website at a later date.
