The company says that current data will remain intact on the device itself, but users of iOS 8 or earlier will not be able to create new backups or access existing backups on iCloud.

Older devices from the early 2010s, such as iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPod touch 5th generation, are eligible for the iOS 9 upgrade. Users must go to “Software Update” in Settings.

Devices on older operating systems can also be manually backed up to a Mac or PC using the programs iTunes or Finder using a USB cable.

Apple said the deprecation was “to more closely align” with current recommended system updates.
