St. John’s freshman Jaiden Glover may see expanded role vs. Baylor

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Freshman guard Jaden Glover has yet to see significant playing time, but that could change Thursday against No. 13 Baylor.

Coach Rick Pitino said on short notice that the highly touted four-star prospect could play a role in the 22nd-ranked Johnnys' Baha Mar Hoops Championship opener.

“This is an athlete's game, and he's a very good athlete,” Pitino said. “They're a very dynamic offensive basketball team, so a guy like Jaden might have to play in this game. If the pace is fast, we might have to play with more guys. yeah.”

The 6-foot-4 Glover did not play in Sunday's win over New Mexico, but he played a total of 15 minutes in the first three games.

However, Baylor will be playing four guards at the same time for extended periods of time, which could force Pitino to play deep on the bench.

In the win over New Mexico, only eight players played in the game, and Simeon Wilcher was the only reserve player to play double-digit minutes.

That may change during this trip. St. John's will play three games in four days. Center Vince Iuchukwu, who also did not play in Sunday's game, is also likely to play.

Pitino isn't too concerned about St. John's turnover rate so far.

They are averaging 13.5 turnovers per game, including 16 on Sunday. Seven of them were by Cadderly Richmond.

“Cadaly was just tired. Because of his fatigue, he just threw the ball away over and over without any rhyme or reason,” Pitino said. “Once he's in great shape to play 94-foot basketball, he won't make those mistakes.”

This will be St. John's first non-conference tournament in the Bahamas since 2016.

That year, the Red Storm went 0-3 in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament under Chris Mullin. … St. John's expects about 400 fans to be in attendance.
