McCarthy predicted last week that Gaetz would not be confirmed by the Senate.
Gaetz has historically been a strong supporter of President-elect Trump, but he hasn't always received a warm welcome from party members.
Mr. Lawler had previously criticized Mr. Gaetz for replacing Mr. McCarthy.
“In October, the House of Representatives was thrown into chaos by Matt Gaetz and his seven useful idiots in the Republican conference and 208 Democratic members of Congress,” Lawler said in April.
Gaetz was the subject of an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which was looking into whether he engaged in sexual misconduct and illegal drug use, among other allegations. Although he has denied allegations of wrongdoing, Gaetz's recent resignation from Congress effectively removed him from the committee's jurisdiction and killed the investigation.
Gaetz said in his post on Thursday that he had had a “great meeting” with senators the day before, but that “my confirmation was unfairly interfering with the important work of the Trump-Vance transition. That is clear.”
“There is no time to waste on needlessly protracted Washington brawls, so I am withdrawing my name from consideration for attorney general,” Gaetz said.
