Grande is hilariously brilliant as Galinda, a narcissistic diva whose only goal in life is to be beautiful, popular, and the center of attention. (“Something is very wrong—it didn’t go my way,” she says to her servants in one scene when she is rejected by her college instructor.)
Galinda's goal is to turn Elphaba into a popular student for her style and beauty.
However, in a plot twist, it is Elphaba who ultimately changes Galinda. The latter begins to abandon shallow ambitions to stand up for the outcast and find value in others.
The film ends with Elphaba flying away on her broom as Galinda sings, “I hope you're happy.” It's a strange turn of events for those of us who know how the story ends, but to be fair, we haven't seen the true evil of Elphaba yet.
evil is a fun, family-friendly musical with little speedup. It is implied that Elphaba is the result of an affair between her mother and a man who is not her husband. (The two are seen dancing and drinking before the scene is cut.) The footage is also scarier than the classic 1939 film, with the winged monkeys looking more menacing and authentic. It looks like.
Note: This movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long.
I left the theater ready for the sequel. I'm sure others feel the same way.
Rated PG for some gruesome action, thematic content, and brief suggestive content.
