Daniel Jones briefly listed on Cowboys’ roster; fans clamor for ex-Giant to sign with rival

The end of an era in New York seemed to be the beginning of a new one in Dallas.

The New York Giants released Daniel Jones on Friday for the first time in six seasons. The quarterback had requested his release after being demoted to the fourth team.

It's a bittersweet ending for the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, who only made the playoffs once during his time with the Giants.

With Dak Prescott out for the season, the Dallas Cowboys are starting Cooper Rush, and fans are begging Dallas to sign another free agent.

And for a moment, fans thought their wish had come true.

For some time after Jones was released, Jones' own player profile page was oddly listed on the Dallas Cowboys roster on the team's official website.

The problem was resolved quickly, so it was probably a bug. However, the Cowboys did not respond to requests for comment on why this happened in the first place.

Despite this, many still want to see the Cowboys do the unthinkable, especially considering the NFC East rivals will play each other on Thanksgiving.

“Jerry Jones could do the funniest thing ever and save Thanksgiving football.” “Big Cat” from Barstool wrote X.

ESPN's Ben Solak wrote, “Universe, I'm not asking for much, but this is a big deal: Cowboys QB Daniel Jones vs. Giants on Thanksgiving. Please.”

added NFL Network's Michael Florio“If Daniel Jones clears waivers and signs with the Cowboys, we'll have Dimes vs. Cutlets on Thanksgiving. Who's to say no?”

Giants owner John Mara said the two sides have agreed to release Jones.

“Daniel is a great representative of our organization and is first class in every way. His response to this situation yesterday exemplified just that. We are all disappointed in the way things have turned out. We hold Daniel in high esteem and are deeply indebted to him. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Mara said in a statement.

“There were some great times, but of course we all wish there were better times. I take responsibility for not having won more games. There are people who wanted to win worse games than I did. Nobody was there and I gave everything I had on the field and in preparation,'' Jones said Thursday after his final practice as a Giant.

“Of course, this season was disappointing for everyone, and of course I wish we could have done more.I am 100% responsible for my role. There wasn't.”

Less than two years after signing a four-year, $160 million contract, Jones leaves the Giants with a 24-44-1 record in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs.
