Teacher fired after allegedly feeding kids dog treats mistaken for beef jerky

A teacher in Mississippi has lost her job after accidentally giving a student a dog treat during a class celebration, local ABC affiliate WTVA reports.

The boy, whose name has not been released by the Calhoun County School District, is now a former Calhoun City High School employee and allegedly mistook the snack for beef jerky.

District Superintendent Dr. Lisa Langford said at least eight children ate at least one bite of the treat Wednesday.

Langford also praised the school nurse's quick response to the situation, including calling poison control, according to WTVA. The school district also alerted parents of affected children to the situation.

The incident occurred during an event meant to celebrate the birthday of several students, local media continued.

WTVA noted that at least one child was taken to a doctor complaining of abdominal pain.
