Tons of chicken, pork and beef recalled over listeria concerns

Yu Shang Food, Inc. is recalling more than 70,000 pounds of its prepared meat and poultry products after a Listeria outbreak sickened at least 11 people, including the death of one infant.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Thursday announced an expansion of the recall. The food was first recalled by the vendor on November 9, 2024.

On Monday, the FSIS press release was updated to include the following: Expanded product list Products subject to recall have been added. All items produced before October 28, 2024 are subject to the recall, including approximately 72,240 pounds of meat or poultry.

The products subject to the recall are assigned the establishment number “P-46684” or “EST.” The USDA inspection marks included “M46684,” FSIS said.

FSIS said it discovered the issue on Oct. 21, 2024, during routine testing of finished products. Officials subsequently confirmed that the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, and subsequent additional testing and environmental samples detected Listeria monocytogenes, FSIS said.

FSIS is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other regulatory and public health authorities in multiple states to investigate the listeria outbreak.

The CDC announced that 11 people in four states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes. Samples were collected from October 24, 2021 to July 31, 2024. Nine people are hospitalized.

A pregnant woman and her twins in California became ill and both died. The mother and one of the twins were both confirmed to have Listeria strains, but no Listeria monocytogenes was found in the home. Sample taken from another infantTherefore, this infected person was not counted as a case related to the outbreak.
