President-elect Trump on Tuesday selected Jamieson Grier as U.S. trade representative.
Greer served as an aide to the US Trade Department during President Trump's first term and will help guide the next president's trade policy.
Mr. Greer is a partner at King & Spalding and his work includes: Contains “Trade Remedies, Trade Policy and Negotiations, Trade Agreement Enforcement, Export/Import Compliance, CFIUS Issues”
The University of Virginia School of Law graduate served as Chief of Staff to Robert Lighthizer in President Trump's Office of the U.S. Trade Representative during his first term. Trump said in Tuesday's announcement that Greer would focus his administration on “containing our massive trade deficit, protecting American manufacturing, agriculture and services, and opening up export markets everywhere.”
News of his selection came a day after Trump announced new tariffs on products from China, Mexico and Canada on his first day in office. The president-elect has imposed 25% tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada, and on products from China, in hopes of forcing U.S. trading partners to step up border security and curb fentanyl trafficking into the United States. said it would introduce an additional 10% tariff.
President Trump said, “During my first term, Mr. Jamison played a key role in combating unfair trade practices by imposing tariffs on countries such as China and replacing the failed NAFTA agreement with USMCA, thereby “This is a better deal for American workers.”
Mr. Greer is an Air Force veteran who served in Iraq. Ministerial-level posts are involved in formulating trade policy and negotiating trade with other countries. The agency has more than 200 employees and offices in Washington, Geneva, Switzerland and Brussels. Mr. Greer must be confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate early next year.
