John Phelan nominated to lead Navy under Trump

President-elect Trump plans to nominate businessman John Phelan to be the next Secretary of the Navy.

“John will be a great addition to the Navy and a solid leader who will advance my America First vision,” President Trump said in a post on TruthSocial Tuesday night. “He will prioritize the business of the U.S. Navy above all else.”

Phelan is the founder and chairman of Lager Management LLC, a private investment firm based in Florida. He was a managing partner at MSD Capital, a private equity firm. Phelan was not serving in the military.

The businessman is a donor to the Trump campaign and other Republican-affiliated committees. He donated $834,600 to President Trump's community fundraising committee, the Trump 47, in April, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings. FEC records show Phelan also made donations to various Republican state party affiliates during the 2024 election cycle.

“His track record of success speaks for itself. He is a true champion of American enterprise and ingenuity,” President Trump said. “John's intellect and leadership are unparalleled.”

In August, Phelan and his wife Amy treated President Trump to an expensive invitation. Fundraising activities The position requires Senate confirmation. Republicans will have a majority in the House next year.

“His incredible knowledge and experience will improve the lives of the brave Americans who serve our country. John will deliver real results for our Navy and our country. Working with him I look forward to it,” President Trump wrote.
