UConn’s Dan Hurley criticizes refs for ‘egregious’ call in loss

Dan Hurley has done it again.

After the Huskies hurt Colorado in the Maui Invitational Tuesday night, the UW basketball coach found himself complaining to the referees for the second day in a row.

UW dropped back-to-back games for the first time since 2022, when they lost to the Buffaloes 73-72.

Hurley found himself enraged by Colorado's Trevor Baskin's offensive rebound that beat Liam McNeely with 24 seconds left.

McNeely was controversially called for an over-the-back foul in the exact same spot on Monday against Memphis.

“Obviously, it affects the game a lot. If it's called over-the-back, obviously we go to the free throw line,” Hurley said of the play with the Huskies leading 72-71. Ta. “Maybe we're shooting one-on-one. I don't even know how bad it was at the time. It says a lot about what the last two days have been like for us. The biggest part of yesterday's game. The play was over-the-back called against us. And today it got even worse because the kid, Baskin, pulled Liam's arm. Ironic. Yo.”

Hurley added that the team's defense was ultimately the bigger issue.

Baskin's rebound allowed the Buffaloes to call a timeout with 20 seconds left in the game.

Hurley was so furious about what had just happened during a timeout that he had to be restrained by assistant Kimani Young.

Andrei Yakimovskiy scored the go-ahead goal with eight seconds left, giving Colorado the victory.

On Monday night, after cursing the officials and giving himself a technical, Hurley called the call on McNeely a “complete joke” in an interview with reporters.
