The Greenville Police Department (GPD) in Texas lost its first deputy in the line of duty on Monday night in more than a century.
Officer Cooper Dawson, 27, was ambushed and shot while chasing a suspect following a traffic stop, the department said in a press release. Dawson managed to fight back and injure the suspect before being airlifted to a hospital where he died.
“Officer Dawson and the suspect were both taken to a local hospital. Officer Dawson was then airlifted to Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Tragically, this marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Greenville Police. This is his first death in the line of duty,” GPD wrote. witness said CBS News In Texas, multiple gunshots and police yells of “get off” could be heard during the crash. Police identified the suspect as Christian Robert Sparger, 25, who remains in critical condition, the paper said.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the death of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly risked his life to serve and protect our community,” Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith said in a press release. . “Please keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

GPD wrote on social media that it would hold a procession Wednesday morning to honor the fallen “hometown hero.”
Dawson previously worked for the Garland Police Department and is a veteran of the National Guard, the newspaper said. He was also a member of the SWAT team and an instructor for his fellow officers. Dawson is survived by his wife and children.
