Suspected gunman who fired more than 200 rounds at Florida condo units killed by sniper’s bullet, sheriff says

A Connecticut man was shot and killed Thursday by a Florida sheriff's sniper who allegedly fired more than 200 shots at neighboring homes and authorities over several hours.

The suspect, identified as Joseph DiFusco, was killed by a Volusia County Sheriff's Office sniper, but there were no other injuries, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood said DiFusco, 56, is a snowbird who may have brought the firearm from out of state because he was staying in an Airbnb, according to the Daytona Beach News Journal. .

“He had no intention of negotiating,” he told the news station. “Every time we tried to negotiate, he fired at us. [He] I turned off his phone. He was armed to the teeth. ”

Neighboring residents were evacuated from the area. Chitwood said DiFusco's family contacted authorities before the incident and said they were concerned for his safety.

“They were sleeping in the car because they were so scared of him,” he said.

He noted that DiFusco has reportedly stopped taking his medication and hasn't slept in days.

Authorities said DiFusco barricaded himself in the rental unit and was in possession of at least three guns.
