Referee taken down during Ohio State-Michigan sideline skirmish

A referee was caught in the crossfire during a skirmish between Ohio State and Michigan State on Saturday.

During the second quarter, Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard connected with wide receiver Jeremiah Smith with one out and 10 base.

After a 4-yard gain, Smith was taken down near the University of Michigan sideline, and things got interesting from there.

Smith got back to his feet, but there appeared to be some jostling between the two rivals.

The field judge, who was caught in the mini-scuffle, fell violently to the grass and momentarily lay at the feet of the players, appearing shaken.

In the end, the referee was assisted and both teams received offsetting penalties for the disturbance.

It's no wonder the Buckeyes and Wolverines, one of college football's oldest and greatest rivalries, came close to coming to blows.

This will be the 119th meeting between Ohio State and Michigan.

The Wolverines, last season's national championship champions, have won each of the past three contests.

Michigan won 13-10, but it ended in an ugly brawl when the teams tried to plant a flag on Ohio State's turf.
