Comer highlights bill challenging work from home deal for federal employees

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) on Tuesday highlighted a previously filed bill challenging agreements on hybrid work protections for federal employees.

“Thousands of federal employees just signed work-from-home agreements ahead of @realDonaldTrump's inauguration.” Comer said in a post about X: “This is why I introduced the SHOW UP Act. Our government needs to show up for the people.”

Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, introduced The SHOW UP Act passed by the House of Representatives in February 2023.

The bill would require federal agencies to implement 2019 telework policies as many government agencies and offices across the country transitioned to virtual work-from-home opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose is to mandate resurrection.

Last week, it was reported that appointees to the Biden administration had agreed to lock in protections for hybrid work, as President-elect Trump and his administration prepare to transition early next year.

The protections target tens of thousands of Social Security workers and are part of several efforts to protect President Trump's plan to reshape the U.S. workforce. Bloomberg first reported.

The newspaper reported that the American Federation of Public Employees, a union representing more than 40,000 employees, reached an agreement with the Social Security Administration last week.

Protecting hybrid and remote work through 2029.

The agreement, signed by President Biden's former SSA Commissioner Martin O'Malley, says it will “maintain current levels of telework” and not necessarily increase it.

President Trump has appointed technology entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswami to head a new organization, the Department of Government Efficiency. They announced “massive” federal layoffs.

Comer tagged Ramaswamy and Musk in the post and said, “It's time to hold the bureaucracy accountable.”
