Thousands of meat pies stolen in unusual five-figure heist

British authorities recently recovered a stolen van containing 2,500 pies in an unusual failed food heist.

The value of the pie was estimated at 25,000 British pounds, or $32,000. These foods were owned by restaurateur Tommy Banks, who owns two Michelin-starred restaurants.

The vehicle was loaded with steaks and ale pies, as well as turkey and butternut varieties, and was headed to York's Christmas market.

The theft of the pie caused an uproar on social media earlier this week, with Mr Banks calling on his followers to find the missing pie.

“Thieves! Keep your eye on the pie!!” Banks wrote about X before the van was found. “Help me find the pie. Let's retrieve it and feed it to some people.”

The bank also called on the thieves to “do the right thing” and dump the pies at the community center so no food goes to waste.

Banks said the pie was left in the stolen van, but it was too damaged to be eaten or sold. The bank confirmed the van was insured, but lamented the loss of the delicious pie.

“It's so wasteful. It's just trash,” Banks said in an Instagram video. “I'm sorry, but this story doesn't have a happy ending.”

The pie incident is one of a handful of food robberies in the UK this year. In October, thieves posing as wholesalers stole more than 950 boxes of English cheddar cheese.
