Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has reached a truce with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) ahead of President Donald Trump's critical 100 days of Congress.
Mr Green will support Mr Johnson's efforts to keep Politico in the House Speaker's gavel reported Breitbart News later confirmed.
Her endorsement is a major prize for Mr. Johnson, who faces key votes in the House, including Democrats, after winning a vote of the entire House Republican conference before Thanksgiving.
Mr Green, who tried to oust Mr Johnson as speaker of the House of Commons earlier this year, said his past criticisms of Mr Johnson were “undoubtedly justified” but that they had “worked to repair our relationship”.
“He's certainly engaging people around him to pass things that he wishes he could have passed in this Congress,” she told Politico.
Greene's endorsement reflects the need for Congressional Republicans to get serious before Trump takes office on January 20, 2025. A scuffle over the gavel could derail an important early legislative process for Mr. Trump.
Still, conservatives maintain their influence over Johnson. This threshold was raised from what was actually in place during pre-Thanksgiving session-wide negotiations, but only nine Republicans are needed to trigger a House vote to vacate the speaker's seat in the next Congress. is.
In May, 163 Democrats voted to save Johnson's gavel after he cleared the way for tens of billions of dollars in Ukraine aid to be sent to President Joe Biden's desk. It is unlikely that Democrats would oppose a secession motion under the Trump administration.
The vote for Speaker of the House will take place on January 3, 2025.
