Brittany Patterson, a Georgia mother of four, was blindsided when her 10-year-old son was found walking alone when police showed up at her home and arrested her. It all started when she was at the hospital with her oldest son when she received a call from a sheriff's deputy who had found her son, Soren, less than a mile from her home.
“She seemed very worried that something terrible was going to happen to her,” Patterson said. glenn beck “The Glenn Beck Program”. “I wasn't worried.”
Officers dropped Patterson off at his father's home, where he lived with the family. But that's when things changed.
“They told me to go outside and put my hands behind my back. So I asked why, and the female police officer said, 'Because you're under arrest.' Ta. So I asked again. “What am I being arrested for? ”
The officer described it as “reckless endangerment,” but Patterson's attorney told her “that doesn't exist in Georgia.”
“It's like the Soviet Union,” Glenn commented, perturbed.
David DeLugas, executive director and general counsel for parentsUSA, said after viewing body camera footage of the incident, Britney told police that “last I checked, it wasn't illegal for children to go to the store.” I heard it.
“Surprisingly, the deputy immediately said, 'When I was 10 years old,'” DeLugas explained. “And I can assure you, it's not illegal for a 10-year-old to be walking around outside. Not in Georgia, that's not the case.”
“The law that Britt was charged with violating is actually called reckless conduct. And in 1997, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that the law was too vague and gave law enforcement too much power.
