Alleged drunk driver kills Texas girl killed as family grapples with losing her

A Texas family is picking up the pieces after a suspected drunk driver killed their 7-year-old daughter and injured her mother in a major crash.

Joel Gonzalez Chacin, 41, suspected of driving under the influence in the crash that killed her, appeared in court Tuesday morning.

He was charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of Ivory Smith, a second-grader at Houston's Klenk Elementary School.

The catastrophic accident also left Mr Smith's mother, Christina Kuainu, seriously injured.

Authorities confirmed to FOX News Digital that a 41-year-old man was drunk when he strangled Christina and her young daughter to death at 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Police said Chacin took photos of the accident scene “instead of helping” and then drove away. Police said the two victims were just minutes from the home.

His bail was set at $150,000 by the 232nd District Court.

In a GoFundMe, the family remembered 7-year-old Ivory as being full of joy and light.

“Ivory brought so much light into our lives in the short time she was with us, and we will forever cherish the joy and love she so generously gave us,” the family said. said.

“While we work through this profound loss, we also face the difficult reality of seeking justice for Ivory,” they said.

The family said Quinuu was dealing with the devastating loss of her young daughter and that her recovery would take a long time.

“She has a long road to recovery and needs everyone's support,” the GoFundMe said. “Please keep our family and our father, Keion Smith, in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
