Last week, at the F1 Academy's first race, the Qatar Grand Prix, Abi Pring did what he had to do to win the Drivers' Championship, finishing second behind Mercedes driver Dorian Ping, with just three spots remaining for the title. Earned enough points in the battle.
Celebrations began in the pit lane as Pring and Alpine reflected on a great season.
Then everything changed.
The second F1 Academy race was canceled after an accident occurred during one of the support races at the Lusail International Circuit. Officials suggested Ping, who had taken pole position for both races in Qatar, would receive two bonus points depending on the result, despite the second race being cancelled.
The series has since announced make-up races for that cancellation, adding a third race to this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Bonus points are offered for pole position in all three races, and Ping gets two bonus points from Qatar, which technically means Ping won the Drivers' Championship. This means that you can mathematically secure enough points. To do so, she needed to win each of the three races with the fastest lap and take all three pole positions. This is a difficult request, but still possible.
Pring ended all potential talks in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
The Alpine driver took pole position in all three races during F1 Academy qualifying, putting an end to any doubts about the Drivers' Championship.
“I wanted it so bad!'' she responded, turning on the radio at the end of qualifying.
This is Pring's second strange celebration of the season. She finished second in the season's second round, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, but was promoted to P1 after the race when she was given a 20-second penalty on Ping for passing the checkered flag twice due to her speed.
So a strange celebration was held at Alpine's garage in Jeddah, Pring explained. SB Nation Back to spring.
“Yeah, it was really weird,” Pule said. SB Nation Regarding the situation in Saudi Arabia. “Obviously that’s not what I really want to win the race for, I definitely want to get everything on track, but I’ll take points where I can.
“In fact, I was watching the F1 race in the Alpine garage and I knew there was an investigation going on. In the end, it was when my victory was announced and all the fireworks were set off at the Grand Prix that ended. , it was the final lap to the checkered flag in F1.
“And I was like, 'They're basically just celebrating me,'” she joked, showing a glimpse of her playful side.
Now she has another chance to celebrate the title.
