Moana is a courageous teenager with a flair for adventure and an indomitable drive to explore the unknown.
But on the small Pacific island of Motunui, where she lives, the unknown is, well, unimaginable. Moana and her people have never seen other civilizations. They also never had the courage to sail beyond coral reefs. It's too dangerous. For some people, it may be prohibited.
“I'm sure there's someone else out there,'' she said one day, sitting on a huge hill looking out at the ocean horizon.
One day, Moana takes a break. In a secluded part of the island, she discovers ancient pottery carved with mysterious symbols. It's unlike anything she's seen before. She believes it is proof that her people were not the only civilization to thrive in the ocean.
Moana delves into people's pasts and uncovers previously untold stories. Once upon a time, the people of the sea were connected as one, but they were separated by the power-hungry god Naro, who sought to weaken the sea dwellers.
Moana learns something else. A secret remote island named Motufetu was the key to uniting Moana's people until Nalo cursed it and seemingly erased it from existence. But there is an even darker revelation. If Motufetu is not discovered soon, the Motunui people will face certain extinction.
“We have to come together,” she says.
Moana goes out to sea.
Will she be able to find the legendary island?
