In an interview that aired on Friday's episode of “The Issue Is,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) will be the state's president in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's victory. He responded to calls for a special session of Congress to help stop President Trump. “The best resistance, if you want to call it that, is to make California work,” he said. We need to listen.” Be honest with yourself that the policies and programs we implement every day don't always produce the results we need. ”
host Erex Michaelson asked.[T]Governor Newsom's first reaction to Trump's victory was to call a special legislative session. They talked about it as California blocking President Trump. Do you think that's a wise use of your time? ”
Mahan replied: “Well, I think the biggest resistance, if you want to call it that, is to make California work and prove that what we're doing here is a model for the future of this country. That's where we've been in the past 50 years. For years, we've been leading the way, innovating, problem-solving, trendsetters. And now we're reacting. And I don't know, certainly. There may be some resistance and there may be legal battles, but the focus should be on making the state the most economically vibrant and competitive. If we do that, we won't have to worry too much about Trump's actions. I think we will continue to move the country forward. But unfortunately, people don't look to us for leadership anymore, and that's the problem.”
Mahan then added: “Our state's Democratic Party is going back to basics, listening to the public on issues that affect their daily lives, and recognizing that the policies and programs we have in place don't always deliver. I think we need to be honest about the results we need. That's why I was an early supporter of Prop 36. ”
