Subway surfing in New York City has claimed lives almost every month this year. As part of a social media trend, teens often try to ride on the outside, but the city is trying to counter that.

The MTA is trying to force social media companies to remove subway surfing content to deter people from replicating the dangerous trend.

While companies claim to be “mostly compliant,” there is no actual data to reflect that, as daredevil surfers continue to put themselves at risk.

An MTA spokesperson claimed that the MTA has its own database to track online content that must be reported, but could not provide the requested data.

Social media companies also refuse to share the data, leaving the MTA in limbo.

Just last month, an 18-year-old boy was seriously injured when he went surfing on the subway.

In late October, a 13-year-old girl died and her friend was seriously injured after trying to climb onto the roof of a subway train as part of an Internet stunt.

The same thing happened just a month ago, when an 11-year-old boy hit his head on a low-hanging metal beam while surfing the subway.

In June, a 13-year-old boy was also murdered after attempting the same trend on social media.
