Bill Belichick coaching North Carolina would be the best worst hire of all-time

At first I was convinced it was a fake post.

Bill Belichick? Coach at the University of North Carolina? It feels like something handed out for people who paid for the checkmark to post shit and spread misinformation.

But it is real and may actually happen. rear Report by Inside Carolina Last week, there were reports that the legendary NFL coach wanted to return to action at the collegiate level, and many in the NFL world are wondering if this is legal. Could the greatest coach in NFL history bring his talents to Chapel Hill? Most of the negotiations are still ongoing, with Belichick himself saying he has spoken to NC State athletic director Lee Roberts multiple times about the job, including a five-hour conversation. .

In addition, Tulane head coach John Sumrall, the top candidate for the job, was removed from the list on Sunday. pittsburgh steelersOffensive coordinator Arthur Smith has also resigned, with Belichick and Army head coach Jeff Monken appearing to be the finalists.

So, to be honest, I went back and forth on whether this was a good idea for the Tar Heels and came to a conclusion. North Carolina hiring Bill Belichick is the best, worst idea ever. In my head I think this is a bad idea, but I think it might work for the Tar Heels. Let me explain:

Without even looking into the process UNC took to get to this point, this hire could backfire in so many ways. The Tar Heels just waived 73-year-old Mack Brown, but he seemed to be there way past his time. Turning around and hiring the 72-year-old Belichick would be an incredibly weird process, firing an old guy and bringing in a guy eight months younger than the guy he fired.

My biggest question regarding recruitment is actually a very simple one. The first is how long Belichick plans to coach at the college level. Like I said, he's 72 years old and college coaching takes a lot out of you. If he intends to be a head coach for three, maybe four years, that's completely understandable, but anything shorter than that would make you question why they hired him at all. Even with the NIL and managing what is basically the equivalent of a college salary, college coaching and recruiting times are a lot different than the NFL, and even if Belichick were the Pats' GM, the game would be a lot different. Probably.

Additionally, hiring Belichick could be counterproductive, especially on offense, if he doesn't have the right staff around him. I'm not worried about defense. If there's one thing Belichick can coach at any level, it's defense. But offensively, he doesn't surround himself with the freshest minds. That gives me pause, but reportedly his staff would be pretty good!

That's why I think Belichick would be a great idea if he could get that staff.

Naturally, he'll probably have his son and DC's Steve Belichick stand by as DC and head coach, but frankly that works out. Belichick led the Husky defense to a top-30 ranking in Defensive SP+ this season, a significant jump from No. 50 on that list last year. Having Steve Belichick as HC would be the perfect combination of getting the present benefit from the Bills without sacrificing the future, which I know Tar Heel fans definitely want. .

Additionally, I think Belichick will be a great recruiter. Being able to go into a recruit's home and show him all eight of his Super Bowl rings and the great players he coached seems like a bonus to me. Belichick only recently had success in the NFL, and recruits still know he's the mastermind behind the Patriots dynasty and will want to play for him.

You see, coaching doesn't give you anything certain. Coaching people who look great on the surface doesn't work, and people who seem terrible end up blossoming. The Belichick-UNC story is weird, but…at least you get the idea.

It could backfire horribly, or it could do wonders. That's why we love college football.
