Biden proposes protections for monarch butterfly

The Biden administration has proposed protecting the monarch butterfly, but the future of protection under the incoming Trump administration is uncertain.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing the orange-and-black butterfly as an endangered species, citing the insect's precipitous population decline.

Eastern migratory monarchs have declined by about 80 percent, western monarchs have declined by more than 95 percent, and western monarchs have a 99 percent chance of becoming extinct by 2080, the report said. .

Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change are contributing to this problem.

“The iconic monarch butterfly is cherished across North America, captivating children and adults alike through its fascinating life cycle,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Commissioner Martha Williams said in a statement. “Together we can make this special species our legacy to our children and future generations.”

In 2020, the Trump administration refused to provide protection to the monarch. At that point, the company decided that while conservation was “justified,” it could not protect the butterfly because resources would need to be devoted to higher-priority species.

At the time, the government granted the monarch “guaranteed but excluded” status, meaning it would consider adding the butterfly to the list each year.

Environmentalists are satisfied with the proposed protections and said they will fight to finalize them under President-elect Trump.

“We have spent 10 years reaching this landmark decision today, and we will not stop until the work is complete,” said George Kimbrel, co-executive director of the center. He's an ally,” he said. spoke to The Hill via email about food safety.
