Jon Stewart's “Daily Show” audience booed Tuesday night when the arrest of the United Healthcare shooting suspect was mentioned during the host's monologue.
The Wrap memo Most of Stewart's opening monologue revolved around the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and the tyrant's subsequent flight to Russia.
“The 11th? How were they able to end a 10-year civil war and defeat the entire Syrian army in just 11 days?” Stewart wondered aloud.
He then asked the cameraman to zoom in on a photo of Syrian rebels celebrating their victory. With the UnitedHealthcare shooter photoshopped in the background, Stewart quickly said, no! I can't help it! ” Stewart joked. “Is that where he rode that city bike?”
The late-night host clarified that the gunman was “obviously” not in Syria, given that the main suspect in the shooting was found at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. News of the suspect's arrest at that location was met with multiple boos from the “Daily Show” audience.
On Monday, police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione on Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Breitbart News reported that Mangione, who was handcuffed, was later seen being led into court by police, and as he entered the Pennsylvania facility, he told reporters, “It's completely common sense.'' It's an outlier and an insult to the intelligence of the American people.”
He was arraigned before a judge for an extradition hearing.
Mangione is charged with murder in connection with Thompson's death on December 4, 2024.
His lawyers are fighting to have him extradited to New York for trial.
