Sales of hooded sweatshirts could soon skyrocket in the greater Chapel Hill area.
The University of North Carolina has offered NFL legend and former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick the vacant head coaching position, according to a report from WRAL in Raleigh.
The media, citing multiple sources, said there were still hurdles to clear. However, the decision was made to begin pursuing Belichick.
WRAL said, “As of Tuesday night, no agreement had been reached and no announcement was imminent.” reported. “If a contract is agreed upon between the six-time Super Bowl champion coach and the university, the UNC Board of Governors must approve it.”
Although Belichick is the most experienced and accomplished coach in NFL history, the future Hall of Famer has no college coaching experience. After an initial meeting with university officials, Belichick was reported to have a “genuine interest” in the job. But during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Belichick appeared to take a more measured view, saying, “We've had some good conversations.” Let's see what happens. ”
Belichick spoke candidly Monday about the interview process and what he expects from a head coach.
“Whenever you join an organization as a coach, no matter what level it is, you just want to share the vision with the other person,” Belichick said.
“What are your goals? What are your expectations? What do you need to achieve them? How can I achieve them?”
So what is his goal and how is he going to achieve it?
“If I was in a college program, a college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for players who are capable of playing in the NFL,” Belichick explained. “It's going to be transferring professional programs, training, nutrition, schemes, coaching and techniques to the NFL. It's going to be an NFL program at the collegiate level and it's going to be an education for players to prepare them for their post-football careers.” .”
UNC's recruiting process could be complicated by reported friction between board president John Player and athletic director Bubba Cunningham. According to WRAL, Player publicly criticized Cunningham over, among other things, the “manner and timing” of firing former Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown.
Belichick will almost certainly delay making a decision until after the expected mass layoffs after the NFL season. But if the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach believes the UNC job is preferable to any chance in the NFL, UNC administrators are willing to use the difference in position to get a deal done with Belichick. It would be hard to imagine not putting it next to it.
