Stanley, a brand whose cups have become a cultural phenomenon in recent years thanks to viral trends on TikTok, is recalling 2.6 million mugs after dozens of people suffered burns due to a defective lid.
The federal government announced Thursday that Stanley is recalling 2.6 million 12- and 16-ounce switchback and trigger-action travel mugs. All of these were manufactured in China.
The recall was ordered because it was determined that the threads on the mug's lid could shrink when exposed to heat and torque, potentially causing the lid to come off during use and creating a risk of burns. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The agency said the order affects products sold between June 2016 and this month. The mugs are commonly sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Target, as well as on e-commerce company Amazon.
“At Stanley 1913, we are committed to continuous improvement and to developing quality products that last a lifetime,” according to a statement from the Seattle-based company posted on social media.
According to the CPSC, Stanley has received 91 reports of 38 burn injuries worldwide (including 16 in the United States) due to lids coming off during use. Two of the burns were reported in the United States.

Stanley has been around for more than 100 years, but it has gained a cult following online thanks to social media influencers who have turned its line of colored cups, mugs and thermoses into a lifestyle trend.
TikTok users who posted videos with the hashtag #StanleyCup generated billions of views, driving interest and demand for the brand.
Stanley's revenue has skyrocketed, from a reported $94 million in 2020 to $750 million last year.
