Myra Guillen, the sister of Army soldier Vanessa Guillen, on Wednesday announced her support for President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.
“I have full confidence in President Trump's nomination of @PeteHegseth for Secretary of Defense,” Gillen posted.
Guillen's endorsement of Hegseth could go a long way in securing support from Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa). worked Similar sentiments were heard from other senators who may be on the fence about Hegseth's confirmation on the issue of military sexual assault.
Gillen posted to X:
My sister Vanessa Guillen was proud to serve our country. Without a doubt, Vanessa's death sparked much-needed change in our military. @realDonaldTrump The President supported the I Vanessa Guillen Act, the biggest change in our nation's military law history. I have full confidence in President Trump's nomination of @PeteHegseth for Secretary of Defense.
Gillen said Biden criticized Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for continuing to deny benefits to military personnel and the current recruitment and retention crisis due to politicization and a “lack of trust.”
she wrote:
For the past four years, Secretary Austin has continued to deny our military the benefits it has rightfully earned and deserved. In fact, under Secretary Austin's watch, our nation's enlisted and active-duty military numbers were the lowest in our nation's history, due in large part to politics, lack of trust, and low morale.
We need a disruptor like Pete Hegseth to fix the Pentagon's bureaucracy. I believe Pete Hegseth will restore morale and give service members the rights they deserve. Then we will be able to strengthen and maintain the greatest military in the world.
Guillén's endorsement comes amid a concerted campaign to block Hegseth's nomination.
Guillen found himself in the middle of an anti-Trump movement. atlantic ocean He published anonymous claims that Trump disrespected his sister and her family.
She spoke out directly to deny the unverified claims, accusing the publication of “politicizing her sister's death,” and revealing that she had voted for Trump earlier in the day.
