Every rookie entering the NFL hopes to make an immediate impact on the team, especially first-rounders who carry high expectations after hearing their name called by commissioner Roger Goodell on draft night. That's the case with designated players.
After breaking the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Scouting Combine, Xavier Worthy increased his draft stock and entered the zone of a potential first-round pick.
During the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs were one of the teams looking for a playmaker to work with Patrick Mahomes on offense. Worthy was still available as the No. 28 overall pick, and they wasted no time adding his speed to the roster.

Worthy was overjoyed that he was selected in the first round, but he didn't want the two-time MVP, three-time Super Bowl champion and six-time Pro Bowl quarterback to throw a football at him. I quickly realized that it would work.
With a 12-1 record in 13 games, you can guess how he feels about that.
“It feels like a dream come true,” Worthy told Fox News Digital ahead of Week 15.

Worthy knew he didn't have time to dwell on Mahomes being his new signal-caller. It was time to get to work, but he quickly realized that for all the wins that come with being a boss, it's business at the end of the day.
“When you come here, you can see why they win,” Worthy explained. “They work hard and approach their jobs the right way. They have a slogan called 'The Formula.' I feel like the lead coach got it right.” [on] In an interview. They really work on it every day and I feel like that says a lot about this program. ”
Of course, there was no guarantee that Worthy would fit right in with Mahomes and get the job done right away. First he had to learn the playbook and then build chemistry with his new quarterback on the practice field and in games.
Now, Worthy took his first career touch against the Baltimore Ravens, taking an end-around flip off Mahomes and bringing it home for a 21-yard rushing touchdown.

Since then, Worthy has 38 receptions on 67 targets for 448 yards, four touchdowns through the air, 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
He feels the trust that quarterbacks need in their receivers is there, and he feels that's led to some pretty good numbers in his first year.
“Pat, he's more like, if you go out there and show you can do it and he trusts you and you earn that trust, he's going to trust you throughout the season. That kind of guy,” Worthy said of Mahomes. “I feel like I've earned his trust and I feel like something good is happening.”
A prime example of this was the Chiefs' recent close win, where Mahomes once again had to adjust his drive to win games.
With the game on the line, fourth out, and the Chargers' pass rush breaking through the offensive line, Mahomes scrambled around the pocket, looking for a receiver to give him a chance to extend the drive.
Mahomes could have looked to Travis Kelce, DeAndre Hopkins, or other veteran options if he wanted. But Worthy knew where he was going, and the moment he turned around to look at the quarterback, he released the ball. Worthy ran back to the ball, secured the ball, and kept his team's chance for victory alive.
The job went well, even if there was some pain.
“I actually dislocated my finger on the same play. I put it back on right after that, and you can see it in the video,” Worthy said. “But being able to gain that trust from quarterbacks in the NFL is huge. I think everyone talks about being that guy in the NFL, so building that trust and being able to work with quarterbacks day in and day out is huge.” Just the fact that we were able to accumulate so much is huge.”
The accumulation of wins resulted in the kind of playoff football every rookie had hoped for.
It was no surprise that the Chiefs defeated the Chargers to win their ninth straight AFC West title, and the rookie hopes he can continue to build a relationship with Mahomes and help them win their third straight Super Bowl.

Worthy has had the pleasure of sharing the field with Mahomes, Kelce and many other Chiefs legends, but he can also make an impact on the Kansas City community just like they have.

That's exactly what happened at this year's DICK'S Holiday Shopping Sprint. There, two lucky winners, Tanisha and her 8-year-old son, AJ, and Molly from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kansas City organized a $2,500 Holiday Wish. A list Worthy assembled in record-breaking time and personally brought to them.
“It was fun,” he said of the experience. “I've always wanted to give back to the community I'm in. It was so fun to see the reaction on the kids' faces. It brightened their day.”
