Mets retiring David Wright’s No. 5 to honor former team captain

The Mets will continue their recent trend of honoring their former captain by finally placing him on the retired list in 2025.

David Wright's No. 5 will be honored July 19 at Citi Field, along with last year's overdue recipients Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, as well as other Mets legends. Baseball officials confirmed on Friday that he will take up the permanent position.

Wright, who is in his second year in the Baseball Hall of Fame after receiving 6.2 percent of the vote in his first year of eligibility a year ago, will also be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame before that day's game against the Reds.

MLB.com first reported the news of Wright's jersey retirement.

Wright, 41, was a seven-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner as a third baseman during his 15 years with the Mets from 2004 to 2018.

He had a career batting average of .296, an OPS of .867, 1,777 hits, 242 home runs, and 972 RBIs.

Injuries plagued the last four years of his career, limiting him to 77 games from 2014 to 2018, but he was able to play in the franchise's most recent trip to the World Series in 2015.

In addition to Gooden and Strawberry, the Mets have retired Jerry Koosman, Keith Hernandez and Willie Mays over the past few seasons under owner Steve Cohen.

They were joined by former managers Casey Stengel and Gil Hodges, franchise ace Tom Seaver, catcher Mike Piazza and league-wide honoree Jackie Robinson.
