Nancy Pelosi Hospitalized in Europe, Suffers Injury on Official Trip for WWII Commemoration

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was hospitalized while traveling in Europe on taxpayer-funded official business.

The former House speaker's staff announced Friday morning that he was hospitalized, citing “injuries.”

“While visiting Luxembourg with a bipartisan delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the Honorable Speaker Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury in the line of duty and was hospitalized for evaluation,” the statement said.

Pelosi's spokesperson added that she is “currently receiving excellent care from her doctors and medical professionals.”[s]He continues to work, but is disappointed that she will not be able to participate in the remaining CODEL activities. ”

CODEL is slang for Congressional Delegation, an official trip by members of Congress and senators and their staff or guests (usually spouses or significant others). CODEL is often criticized by reformers as little more than a tax-funded vacation, but Congressional ethics agencies must approve the trip in advance to ensure a connection to work.

The 84-year-old's hospitalization announcement comes after longtime Congressional leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who is also in his 80s, suffered a fall earlier in the week that forced him to take time off from his Senate job and stay home. It was held the next day.

A spokeswoman for Pelosi said she looks forward to returning home soon.
