Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has begun an effort to incorporate his SpaceX Starbase facility in Texas, asking county officials to incorporate it as Starbase City, Texas. He called for elections to be held.
of daily mail report Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is reportedly on a mission to turn the site of his rocket company's Texas headquarters into its own city. In a letter filed Thursday with Cameron County officials, SpaceX asked the county to allow its Starbase facility to be incorporated into the Rio Grande Valley region's newest city (appropriately named Starbase, Texas). He called for an election to be held.
Starbase, located near Boca Chica Beach in southern Texas near the Mexican border, is a currently unincorporated town that serves as the primary development and launch site for SpaceX's Starship and Super Heavy rockets. . More than 3,400 SpaceX employees and contractors currently work at the rapidly expanding site.
Earlier this year, Musk, 53, announced plans to move SpaceX's headquarters from California to the Starbase facility, citing the Golden State's new gender identity law as the reason for the move. Musk personally moved to Texas from California in 2020.
“Continuing to grow the workforce needed to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship requires the ability to grow Starbase as a community,” SpaceX's letter to county officials said. . “That's why we're asking Cameron County to hold an election to incorporate Starbase as the Rio Grande Valley's newest city.”
Musk expressed enthusiasm for the move on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “SpaceX headquarters will officially be located in Starbase City, Texas!” the tech billionaire wrote in the post.
Musk first publicly floated the idea of creating a city called Starbase in 2021, but this is the first time a formal petition has been filed to start the incorporation process. Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., the area's top elected official, said the county's legal and elections teams will review the petition to determine whether it meets all legal requirements. He said he would proceed with the process.
However, SpaceX's rapid development in the region has not been without controversy. Some local residents oppose the expansion, and the environmental group SaveRGV filed a lawsuit against the company in July for pollution violations. SpaceX countered that a state investigation found no environmental risks and called the lawsuit “frivolous.”
The facility received even more national attention after Musk made a high-profile visit to Starbase with President-elect Donald Trump before a recent rocket launch. If the incorporation effort is successful, it would give Musk broad powers to shape the Starbase region's future growth and municipal governance.
