Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) argued that Americans “can't complain” if President-elect Trump does what he said he would do during the campaign.
“Donald Trump won. He won overwhelmingly.” Romney said Sunday on CNN's “State of the Union” what he's going to do, and that's what he's doing. he said. “So people are saying, 'Oh, I don't like this appointment or this policy that he's talking about,' but these are the things he said he would do when he ran.”
“So you can't complain about people doing what they say they're going to do.”
Romney, who has been a senator since 2019, joined the network for his exit press conference. The 77-year-old Utah senator announced last year that he would retire from the Senate, opening the door to a new generation.
Although he has been critical of President Trump, he acknowledged in an interview Sunday that he agrees with the president-elect on “many” policy points. Romney said he did not support Trump in the last two elections due to personality differences.
“I don't agree with him on some things, but I'm like, okay, let's give him a chance to do what he's trying to do and see how it goes.” he said.
Mr. Romney said he was not concerned about Mr. Trump's potential prosecution threat and hoped the president-elect would spend his next term focused on “the future.”
In his farewell speech on the Senate floor earlier this month, Romney called for bipartisanship and urged lawmakers to come together, even though the party seems more divided than ever. .
