The Seattle Seahawks are currently fighting to win the NFC West and make the playoffs, and they may have to do it without their starting quarterback. Geno Smith missed Week 15's game against the Green Bay Packers with a knee injury.
The Seahawks will hire Sam Howell as their new quarterback.
Smith immediately felt pain but walked to the sideline on his own. He was examined in a blue medical tent before eventually walking to the locker room. NBC reported that he was heading to the facility's X-ray room and was clearly frustrated by the situation. During the ensuing drive, Smith stumbled back to the sideline, still in his uniform, in obvious pain.
Howell was a starter for the Washington Commanders in 2023, but was traded to Seattle in the offseason following a change in general manager and coach in Washington, D.C. As a starter, he went 4-13, just shy of 4,000 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and went 1-for-1. He tied for 21 interceptions.
Entering Week 15, Smith was averaging 267.5 yards per game, the highest of his 11-year career. He had 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions before the game, with one interception in the end zone.
