The injury was a huge blow to a Lions team that averaged the most points per game (32.8 points) in the NFL.

Two months ago, the Lions gave Montgomery a two-year, $18.25 million contract extension after he helped form a potent backfield duo with Jahmil Gibbs.

Montgomery initially signed with the Lions in 2023 on a three-year, $18 million contract after spending four seasons with the Bears.

He rushed for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns in 14 games last season, adding 183 yards and two touchdowns in three playoff games.

Through 14 games this season, Montgomery has rushed for 775 yards, 12 touchdowns, had 36 catches and received 341 yards.

Injuries should lead to a more fulfilling workload for Gibbs, who had 945 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in 15 games as a rookie last year and earned Pro Bowl honors with 52 catches for 316 yards and one receiving touchdown. is.
