Aaron Rodgers slayed the dragon, but felt a unique sense of emptiness.
In early 2011, when Rodgers and the Packers defeated the Steelers 31-25 in Super Bowl 45, the star quarterback started his career by not receiving a Division I scholarship out of high school and has continued to do so since then. I had a chip removed from my shoulder. The infamous draft day slide.
In the Netflix documentary “Aaron Rodgers: Enigma,” released Tuesday, Rodgers reflected on the dichotomy of achieving a lifelong dream but not feeling the fulfillment that came with that victory.
“It was a special night, but what happened afterwards was a little strange. There was no great party,” Rogers said in the documentary. “You're kind of tired and you're sitting on the bus. It's 1 a.m. and you just accomplished the greatest thing ever. You're like, 'That was cool, but what do we do?' ”
“Now I've achieved the only thing I really, really wanted to do in life. Now, what? “Maybe I was aiming for the wrong thing, or maybe I'll finally find true happiness.” I wondered, “Have I spent too much time thinking about things that don’t bring me anything?”
He said off-the-field opportunities have been a “whirlwind,” as well as sponsorship deals such as his famous State Farm campaign, and he also alluded to his infamous feud with his family.
“My personal life was fun, but winning the Super Bowl changed everything,” Rodgers said.
“Enigma” is produced by Religion of Sports in association with Skydance Sports and NFL Films.
“I was really struggling with who I was and who I wanted to be,” Rodgers continued.
“Dealing with success is one of life's greatest teachers, because it hits you so many times, makes you question so many things, and makes you try to figure out who you are. ” I was definitely looking for other ways to fill that hole inside. It's something I've struggled with for years. I was like, “Okay, this is going to be the only thing I accomplish in my life?” Can I love myself even if this is all I've ever done?
This suffering became the catalyst for a spiritual journey for Rogers, which led him to explore different avenues of faith and ultimately to use the psychedelic drug ayahuasca to discover his identity and inner peace. I did.
