Expanding barnacles! A thunderous typhoon! A blue blistered barnacle in a thundering typhoon! Who knew there was a 300-year-old tomb in Essex associated with Tintin's hard-drinking best friend, Captain Haddock?
Mary Haddock's little-known grave in Leigh-on-Sea's churchyard has been named as one of Historic England's unusual sites to be listed in 2024.
It is one of 17 'remarkable and unusual historic buildings and places' that have interesting links to Tintin and have been given protection, which collectively highlight the diversity of England's heritage. Historic England claims there is.
The 2024 list also includes a Brutalist 1960s church above a Tesco Express, a pioneering former maternity ward and an electrical junction box.
The annual list is both fun and provocative. Heritage Minister Chris Bryant said: “As with all 'best of the year' lists worth reading, we have taken a close look at these 17 amazing places and hope you experience some of them for yourself in the new year. I hope so.”
Haddock's Tomb It is one of three “very unusual” 17th century stone box graves in St Clement's Churchyard, Leigh-on-Sea. They are all Grade II listed in 2024 and each has an unusual story to tell.

It's a name that will excite Tintin fans. Mary married into the Haddock family, known for their famous seafarers, including their son, Admiral Richard Haddock. He and his family were the inspiration for Hergé's Captain Haddock character in the comic The Adventures of Tintin.
As all Tintin fans know, Captain Haddock was Tintin's hot-tempered and generally passionate confidant and protector, with a wonderfully wild manner of speaking and a weakness for whisky.
Also listed next to it is the grave of Mary's father William Goodlad, a whaler who achieved national importance in developing British sea routes. He planned Britain's first whaling expedition to Norway.
of Third tomb, erected in 1609belonging to Mary Ellis, who is said to have lived to be 119 years old. The inscription states that Ellis never married, and describes her as “a virgin of noble courage and very promising hopes.”
Historic England said the tomb, dedicated to a single woman without a husband or children, “represents a remarkable challenge to 17th-century gender norms”.
This tomb is doubly interesting because it is known locally as the “Tachi Stone” because of the incision on its top. It was used as a whetstone, Probably by the sword-wielding press group. He was the person who forced men to join the Royal Navy in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The list also includes Broadmead Baptist Church, Bristollocally known as “the church above the store.” If people look up from the street as they pass Tesco Express, with its large, creepy pictures of carrots, chickens and pastries, they will see a concrete modernist gem.
Built between 1967 and 1969, the church was conceived as the “Baptist Cathedral of the West” and was described by Historic England as a “remarkable example of post-war church architecture”.
Huddersfield in West Yorkshire is double included on the list, first Former maternity ward at Princess Royal Community Hospital.
The Bungalow Maternity Ward, with its well-ventilated private rooms, was built in 1928 and highlights what heritage experts say was a “pivotal moment in the development of public health care for women”. Masu.
The second is a blue iron electrical junction box in Huddersfield town centre. Easily overlooked and graffitied, Historic England described it as a “remarkable preservation of Victorian engineering, offering a glimpse into early electricity distribution and the fascinating development of infrastructure that powered Britain's electricity revolution.” It should be celebrated as something that can be done.
