Donald Trump has received the electoral votes he needs to win the election.
State electors voted Tuesday to cast their votes for president.
After a formal vote, it will head to Congress for formal certification.
President-elect Trump has received the necessary number of electoral votes to take the next White House seat, with Congress set to formally certify his victory next month.
Electors in each state were expected to meet Tuesday to vote for president and vice president before the results were officially certified. Trump needs 270 electoral votes to take the formal path of being sworn in in the Oval Office, which he did on Tuesday afternoon, according to CNN and the Washington Post.
Under the Electoral College's unusual system, voters are technically voting for a presidential candidate on the slate of electors. In most cases, no matter which candidate wins a state, that state's electors will cast their votes, with two exceptions: Nebraska and Maine.
The electors then meet in December, specifically on the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday of the month, where they formally cast their votes (also known as voting certificates). These certificates must be sent to multiple locations, including Congress, by December 25th.
