Josh calls the 1,547-page continuing resolution (CR) spending bill negotiated by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and released just days before Friday's deadline “an embarrassment.”・Senator Hawley said. said During an appearance on “The Alex Marlowe Show” on Wednesday.
“And the fact that the Republican Speaker of the House is trying to personally negotiate this and shove it down our throats without any notice — they just killed this bill and they want to vote on it tonight. There it is – I can’t believe it,” Holly said.
Johnson has faced massive pressure from Republican lawmakers since the spending bill was announced Tuesday night. The spending bill is intended to keep the government running until March 2025, but instead includes billions of dollars in additional spending on a number of concerns.
For example, the bill includes a one-year extension of the State Department's Global Engagement Center (GEC), which funds organizations that censor conservative media such as Breitbart News. It also includes provisions that would raise salaries for members of Congress, allow them to opt out of Obamacare, and prohibit or obstruct investigations into Congress.
Hawley called the rushed process “a complete clown show,” but said he hopes enough Republicans who oppose the bill can stop the bill's spending overreach.
“I'm tired of it myself, and I think the American people are tired of it, too,” he said. “They want people who walk their talk. Republicans have been saying for years that they're not going to play these games, they're not going to do these kinds of things, and Mike Johnson just keeps going. ”
When Mr. Marlowe asked Mr. Hawley how Congress could organize its process and avoid voting on thousands of pages of unread legislation, he said the first step was to “do what they say. It's about having leadership that actually does it, the senator said.
“We should stop introducing huge bills, thousands of pages, at the end of the year. We should follow the process. The budget was supposed to pass in September. By law, Congress They're supposed to pass a budget in September. They're supposed to do it in 10 separate budget bills so we can debate them, read them, and pass them. They haven’t done any of that,” he said.
“They obviously blew through the September deadline, and now that we're at the end of the year, there's a ton of things piling up. They're counting on that fact, Alex, there's no time left. , which means no one will have time to read this.'' That's what they want,” he continued. “They don't want us to read it and find out what's packed into it. ”
“Democrats have been doing this for decades. The fact that Republicans are doing it is just disgusting,” he added.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) on Wednesday became the first Republican to publicly say he would not support Mr. Johnson in January's speaker race. This also applies to Hawley's opinion.
Asked if Republicans needed a new House speaker, Hawley said, “Well, I'm not voting for Mike Johnson.”
President-elect Donald Trump, who supported Johnson's nomination in November, said Wednesday that he was “totally opposed” to the bill. President Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance also issued a statement warning that the bill would “give lenient provisions to government censors and Liz Cheney.”
