President-elect Trump on Thursday accused Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) of “getting in the way” of pushing to raise the debt ceiling as part of funding the government. He encouraged them to consider challenging the lawmaker in the general election. I'll talk.
“Very unpopular Texas 'Congressman' Chip Roy is sabotaging big Republican wins as usual – all for his own cheap publicity. Republican obstructionist eliminated. President Trump posted on Truth Social.
In a subsequent post, the president-elect said he was hopeful that “competent challengers are preparing to take a shot at the Texas primary. He doesn't stand a chance!”
Trump also endorsed Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), who lost to a Trump-backed challenger in the primary earlier this year, after endorsing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for president. I used it.
Thursday is not the first time Roy has drawn Trump's ire. The former president suggested he should run in the Texas Republican primary in 2023, after the state's filing deadline had already passed, after Mr. DeSantis also endorsed him.
Roy easily won re-election in November.
The Lone Star State lawmaker, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, has been outspoken about the need to cut government spending to offset the president-elect's planned tax cuts next year when he returns to office.
President Trump is asking lawmakers to raise or eliminate the debt ceiling as part of an ongoing debate to fund the federal government, an idea many lawmakers have balked at. The standoff has fueled threats that a government shutdown could begin Saturday morning if no deal is reached.
“Our country would be far better off shutting down for a period of time than agreeing to what the Democrats are trying to impose,” President Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.
The Hill has reached out to Roy's office for comment.
