“We're going to cross that bridge when we get there,” Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) said in response to a question. Breitbart News Daily Will you support Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) in next year's election?
Mr Tiffany made the remarks just days after the announcement of a huge spending bill, largely seen as a dismal failure of Prime Minister Johnson's leadership.
The Continuing Resolution (CR) has been criticized for various findings contained in the 1,547-page bill, including a pay increase for Congress and a provision that would allow members of Congress to opt out of Obamacare.
Although Tiffany is unhappy with the deal, he added some context to the uphill battle Johnson faced negotiating the bill.
“I'll defend the speaker a little bit. His vote count was close, and there are several conservative Republicans who said, 'No, I will not vote for a continuing resolution in any form.' So if Johnson doesn't get the votes, he'll be forced to go Democratic, he explained, and it only takes a small number of people in that position to force Johnson to join the Democratic Party. He pointed out that there is always a need to cast additional votes. Expenses.
“When you have to go Democratic, that's why you never have to. It doesn't matter if you're in the U.S. Congress or in a state legislature. If you go Democratic, the Democrats will go.” From you It’s about getting more spending,” explained a member of the House Freedom Caucus.
He said both parties are to blame for stuffing the bill, but Democrats are primarily to blame.
“Right now, legislators on both sides of the aisle, primarily Democrats, are working on this issue. But I think when people see an opportunity, they're going to try to put their pet projects in there. Yes, I mean, there's Look, there's $110 billion in disaster-related spending that's unpaid. So we shouldn't be doing that,” he said.
“That means we, as conservatives, like the Freedom Caucus, you have to pay for it,” he continued.
But at the end of the day, Tiffany said, it's important to understand how people got into this position in the first place.
“How did we get there? By not having a budget process. By having all 12 spending bills completed without debate,” he said, adding, “It's actually like a 1,500-page omnibus bill. ” I expected a clean continuing resolution instead.
When asked if he would support Mr Johnson in next year's election as speaker, Mr Tiffany did not give a clear answer.
“On January 3rd, we're going to cross that bridge. So this is going to create a problem for the chairman,” Tiffany said. “There’s no question about it: Is this the kind of leadership we’re going to have?
“So that question will be decided after Christmas. We have to get this done first.”
