President Biden on Saturday expressed condolences over the attack on a German Christmas market that left five people dead and 200 injured.
“No community, and no family, should have to endure such a despicable and dark event, especially just days before a holiday of joy and peace,” Biden wrote.
He said his administration would be in close contact with German officials.
“We have made clear that the United States stands ready to provide all available resources and assistance as needed. And while this situation is still under investigation, please make no mistake. The United States will always stand by our allies. Together, we stand against violent terrorism,” Biden wrote.
A five-year-old child was also a victim of the Magdeburg market attack. Magdeburg is a city in northern Germany, west of Berlin.
A 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia who permanently resides in Germany was arrested in connection with the attack, which German authorities said was intentional.
The New York Times, citing reports in Germany, said the man posted on social media criticizing German authorities' tolerance of Islamic extremists. He has also posted on social media his support for the anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany.
