As a physician deeply committed to improving the health of our nation, I have seen firsthand the challenges plaguing our health care system. I wrote about these in 2020 in Make America Healthy Again.
Sadly, our situation is worse now than it was then. The new presidential administration has an opportunity to enact meaningful reforms that prioritize patient care, personal responsibility, and the power of American innovation.
Here are five important steps the administration must take to make America healthy again.

1. Promoting free market principles in health care
America's strength lies in free markets, and this principle should continue to be extended to health care. By reducing burdensome regulations and increasing competition, we can lower costs and improve care. Furthermore, price transparency is key to improving the quality of private healthcare systems.

Requiring hospitals to publish cash prices for services would allow patients to make informed comparisons of services regardless of their insurance company's in-network status. Insurance companies should allow you to include money spent on all medical care, whether in-network or out-of-network, in your deductible. If a patient chooses a provider with a lower-than-average price, the patient should share in the cost savings that accrue to the insurance company.
No patient should go bankrupt for an emergency medical procedure. What we are seeing is insurance companies squeezing patients and doctors by not covering the cost of services provided, and then “surprising” patients by not paying the beneficiary bill for emergency services. It's playing the usual game of “billing”. Emergency services must be paid for by your insurance company regardless of network status. Patients should be focused on saving their own lives rather than making sure they go to the appropriate emergency department.
Promoting free market principles also requires the expansion of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), which can be used for any medical service, including everything wellness-related, even a trip to the doctor or a pair of running shoes. Should.

A free market environment encourages health care providers to compete on price, quality, and service, leading to improved health care delivery. HSAs give patients control over their medical expenses. Providers that want to attract this funding will need to compete on quality, price, or both.
2. Combat the chronic disease epidemic
Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity account for a large portion of America's health care costs and preventable deaths. Governments must prioritize preventive care by encouraging healthier choices.
Tax credits for gym memberships, nutritional counseling, and wellness programs can encourage lifestyle changes. Reforming agricultural subsidies to prioritize nutritious, whole foods over processed and sugar-laden products will help move our country toward better health. Government-funded subsidies should be limited to healthy foods that nourish the body and mind, and local governments should make neighborhoods safe for outdoor physical activity.

3. Empowering nations to innovate
Healthcare must reflect the diversity of our country. Nations should be free to design health care systems that meet their unique needs. Each state has existing relationships with hospitals, family physicians, insurance companies, and nonprofit organizations that they can leverage to improve the health of their populations.
Converting Medicaid funds into block grants allows states to innovate and use resources more efficiently. This approach fosters creativity and accountability while ensuring vulnerable populations receive the care they need. States could also allow “emergency only” health insurance plans while allowing patients to use expanded HSA funds to pay discounted cash prices for preventive and routine care.
States could also expand telehealth services to improve access to care and cap drug copays to make necessary drugs more affordable.

4. Restore the doctor-patient relationship
Overregulation and the collapse of bureaucracy doctor-patient relationshipturning personalized care into an assembly line. The administration needs to reduce onerous reporting requirements from Medicare and private insurance companies and give doctors more time to spend face-to-face with patients.
By removing the stronghold large hospital systems have built over independent physician practices and eliminating strict restrictive accommodations altogether, they can force competition and reduce costs while simultaneously improving quality of care. , would allow patients to choose their doctor.
Insurers are contracting with large hospital systems to consolidate care to save money and displace top doctors. They do this by keeping reimbursement rates so low that doctors and other health care providers are forced to consolidate into siled care or drop insurance coverage altogether. .

5. Ensuring a safe pharmaceutical supply chain
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in our pharmaceutical supply chain. Over-reliance on overseas manufacturing exposes us to shortages of critical medicines. The administration should encourage domestic production of essential medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to protect public health. A strong “Buy American” policy for medical supplies is essential to our national security and preparedness.
Restoring America's health requires bold action, a commitment to free market principles, and a focus on individual empowerment. By implementing these five strategies, the new administration can build an affordable, effective, and patient-centered health care system. It's time to prioritize health over bureaucracy and empower Americans to take charge of their own well-being.
