Long Island beachgoers find human jaw in eerie discovery during evening stroll: cops

Two Long Island beachgoers made a creepy discovery of a human jawbone in the sand during a walk Monday night, police said.

Police said the man and woman were walking along the beach at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, on the island's south shore, just before 5 p.m. when they discovered the bones.

According to authorities, the two men delivered the remains to a park ranger working at the beach, who alerted the police.

The Suffolk County Coroner's Office has determined the remains are human, but further investigation is needed to link them to a specific person.

Detectives with the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad are also investigating the discovery.

The disturbing discovery was made as the trial of 60-year-old Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuerman continues. Valerie Mack, 24, is currently charged with the murders of seven sex workers on Long Island. Jessica Taylor, 20 years old. Megan Waterman, 22 years old. Melissa Barthelemy, 24 years old. Maureen Brainerd Burns, 25 years old. Sandra Kostila, 28 years old. and Amber Lynn Costello (27).

Most of the victims' remains were discovered between December 2010 and April 2011 along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, also on Long Island's south coast.
