Bills’ Sean McDermott avoids airplane analogy after 9/11 comments

A week after their dominant performance against the Detroit Lions, the Buffalo Bills notched a not-so-convincing win in a called game against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The Bills were expected to blow the lowly Patriots out of the water.

However, New England continued to defend themselves for at least three-quarters of the game.

A costly mistake by rookie QB Drake Maye in the fourth quarter helped the Bills take advantage of a 24-21 victory.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott was asked Monday about his team's first-half performance.

He said he was going to do an airplane comparison but didn't want to get into it.

“Um, well, I was going to compare it to flying an airplane, but I’ll leave it at that,” he said.

McDermott appeared to be referring to a head-scratching story from last December in which he was revealed to be trying to explain how the team could come together after a season of losses in the AFC Championship.

That moment is recorded in Ty Dunn's book. Go Long TD substack.

“He told the entire team that we needed to come together,” Dunn wrote of McDermott. “But sources say he used a strange model: the terrorists of September 11, 2001. He was able to perfectly orchestrate the attack, with all the hijackers working in unison. listed as a group of people.

“One by one, McDermott began asking specific players in the room questions. “What tactics do you think they used to work together?'' The young players methodically tried to answer. “What do you think their biggest obstacle was?'' The veteran replied, “TSA'' and mercifully lightened the mood. ”
