Carl Switzer shot to fame as the freckled-faced Alfalfa in the Our Gang series, but it wasn't exactly a great life for the actor.

At the age of 31, the former child star reportedly died in a dispute over $50. That's the equivalent of $539.36 in today's money, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

“All hell broke loose,” said James Tehrani, who wrote the new book. “Alfalfa – The Rascal you knew, the character you didn’t know.” he told FOX News Digital.

“I think there's more to this story than $50,” he said. “But what was important to me was not to put any more misinformation out there and to stay away from rumors and hearsay…This is just the beginning and I know there will be more to come.” I hope.”

At the time of the deadly fight, Switzer was a bartender and a hunting dog trainer. The success he once had in Hollywood seemed long gone as he took on odd jobs. history.com He also noted that he had several clashes with police.

A few weeks ago, he was training one of Moses “Bud” Stiltz's dogs during a hunting trip. The dog ran away, and Stiltz tried to retrieve it. According to the book, Switzerland published a notice in a newspaper offering a $35 reward.

Someone found the dog and came forward for a reward. Switzer paid the man, thanked him by buying him a few drinks, and rang up a bar tab of $15, or $100 in today's money. However, at some point in the evening, Switzer felt that Stilz should repay the $50, the publication said.

“Maybe it was a matter of principle, or maybe it was because he really needed the money,” Tehrani wrote.

“He was scheduled to appear in court weeks after the death of a woman he could not trace,” Tehrani told Fox News Digital. “She lent him quite a bit of money…that may have been part of it. I heard other things during the investigation, but I didn't put them in the book because I couldn't confirm them.”

“Karl put a message in the newspaper with a reward of probably $35,” Tehrani said. “I spent hours…trying to find this classified ad and couldn't find it. So, I don't know if it's true or not. But strangely enough, one day my dog found this gentleman… and brought the dog back…Karl wasn't sick.'' It's great financially, but you buy the guy $15 worth of drinks, but when you think about it, it's not worth it at all. This is an amount that cannot be exceeded. ”

Tehrani noted that the Swiss “ultimately had a problem.”

“His marriage was turbulent,” Tehrani explained. “He and his wife [Diantha Collingwood] We got married very early. After a few months of dating, they had a son and moved to Kansas. There was an opportunity for a better life, but it did not last long. So he had a hard time, especially when he returned to Hollywood and was away from his son. ”

“There were other incidents along the way,” Tehrani noted. “In 1958, he cut down a bunch of Christmas trees. He got caught and fined for it. It was a tough time financially.”

Switzer's friend, photographer Jacques Piot, offered to drive Switzer to meet Stilz at night. Upon arriving at the home of Stiltz's girlfriend, Rita Corrigan, Switzer “stepped outside and hurried to the front door.”

Corrigan heard a voice say, “Western Union for Bud Stiltz.” When the door wouldn't open, Switzer said forcefully, “Let me in or I'll break the door down.”

Stiltz, seemingly unperturbed, tells Corrigan to let Switzerland in. When the door opened, Switzer “ran straight toward Stilz.” Mr. Piot was putting out a cigarette outside, but he did not immediately follow Suisui.

“There was a collision upstairs,” Tehrani said. “In the end, Bud ended up getting hit a lot and Carl ended up wrestling with Bud. Then Jack came in and tried to break things up as best he could. It appears that…then gunshots were fired.”

“What happens depends on who you believe,” Tehrani said. “Jacques Piot said that Karl was trying to leave and had his hand on the door when he was shot. Bud said he felt in danger and that Karl was probably attacking him with a knife. The problem with this case is that it's what he said,'' she said of the situation. ”

There were a few things that everyone agreed on. Stiltz, battered and bruised, was hit in the head with a watch. Switzer was then shot in the abdomen. He reportedly told Stiltz, “What did you shoot me for?”

When police arrived, Switzer was crouched on the ground next to the door, clinging to life. Switzer did not bleed much from the wound, but he died from his injuries by the time he reached the hospital.

Emergency personnel found a closed switchblade. But Tehrani said Piot claimed he never saw Switzer holding a knife.

“What we do know is that Carl and Bud were seemingly good friends at one point,” Tehrani said. “They were both hunters. But at some point, things went south. There were apparently frequent phone calls going back and forth in the months leading up to this…but that's what he said. , it was more like “she said it.” “

Mr. Stiltz told reporters that Mr. Switzer entered the premises either drunk or “under the influence” and demanded $50. Mr. Stiltz also claimed that Mr. Switzer took the gun from him, but that he took it back. That's when Switzer pulled out a knife and said, “I'm going to kill you.” Stiltz said he had no choice but to shoot the actor in self-defense.

Meanwhile, Piot said he never saw Switzer with a gun in his hand.

Despite the number of people in the house, there were “various and sometimes widely differing recollections of what happened that night,” the book stressed.

The jury ruled the case a justifiable homicide. Piot died in 1973, and Stiltz passed away in 1983.

For decades, rumors persisted that Switzer was from Hollywood and had dabbled in drugs. Tehrani said this could not be further from the truth.

“There's a popular belief that he disappeared from Hollywood after he left the Our Gang series,” he said. “That's true to an extent. He didn't have any major roles after the Our Gang series, but he appeared in a TV show or movie every year until just before his death in 1959.”

“Look at It's a Wonderful Life. It's a movie that people watch every holiday season…He played a role there, he was uncredited, but he had a great dance scene and Donna -I was dancing with Reed…he was in “The Defiant Ones.” and The Ten Commandments, two important films. ”

“He deserves recognition,” Tehrani continued.
